Greetings to all; I hope you all had a wonderful January,
and I hope that the first month of 2006 was a great one.
I was very pleased with the attendance
at Winterfest. This year the turnout was great, and I have heard from
numerous people that they will take home many great memories from thier
stay.
Congratulations to all of the new
members who joined at Winterfest. You all joined great chapters, and I
know that you will have a lot of fun in this organization. Thanks to
everyone that helped plan the event and who helped at various times
during the weekend.
Also, congratulations to everyone who
competed in the Ritual Competition and to those of you who qualified for
the Heartland Ritual Competition in Chicago.
Information on the Heartland Ritual
Competition can be found on the Region 4 website, http://region4.seconddist.org.
Have a great February and a Happy
Valentines Day to all of Ohio DeMolay.

This month you should put some
thought into having a Valentine’s Day Dance-a-thon.
This would be an easy
event to set up as well as a fun way to make some money for your chapter.
First, you would need to
set it up just like any other dance: DJ, Dance Hall, Chips, and drinks. A
Dance-a-thon is basically a dance where you get people to sponsor the
young men and women for each hour they dance. Remember that this is an
endurance dance so play a lot of slow songs to give the dancers some
rest.
So once the dance part is
set up it is time to send your members to the local Lodge, Council,
Commandry, Shrine, and Eastern Star meetings or even have them go door-to-door
looking for sponsors. They should ask for each person to donate around
one dollar to DeMolay for each hour they dance. Some will not give that
much and some will give more but the hope is that each kid could raise at
least one hundred dollars.
Your chapter should come
up with a goal for each member and stick to it. If each member of your
chapter gets twenty sponsors at one dollar per hour and each dances 5
hours straight they will make one hundred dollars each. If you have 10
members then you just made ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS.
This is also an easy
event that the Rainbows and Job’s Daughters could piggyback onto
but if they do, ask them to pick up some of the cost of the DJ, Hall, and
food.
Once the dance is over,
simply go door to door collecting the money they pledged.
So there you go, a simple
and fun fundraiser that everyone can benefit from.

March is coming and you know what that means. March
Membership Madness!
March is when all the winter sports end
and the spring sports haven't started up yet. Like November, it's a big
time for membership. To ensure a big March membership class you should start
on a 4x4 plan in February, if you haven't started already.
Have your chapter make a list of every
person they think would make a good DeMolay. From that list gather those
prospects addresses and phone numbers.
Send out a form letter to the prospect
and another letter to his parent(s) telling them they have been
recommended to join DeMolay.
In that letter give a brief description
of DeMolay and invite them to a prospect party later in February. Make
sure the party is on a day that doesn't conflict with sports or holidays.
Both parents and prospects should come
to the first party with the parents and prospects separated at some point
with advisors talking to the parents about DeMolay and DeMolays talking
to the prospects. A good way to end the party is with the Ceremony of
Light to show the parents an example of DeMolay ritual.
Either later in Feb or early March a
second party should be held with a focus on fun and fellowship. Have a
Halo party or a sleepover something that will be fun for the prospects.
And the perfect follow-up to the second party is an invitation to an
initiation before the end of March.
And it's not even late, unless you open
the message tomorrow, then it's late.

Please take time to read the “News
and Views” link off the web site on a frequent basis. You'll find
out details about many interesting things happening throughout Ohio.
2006 seems to be starting off right! I
met with Middletown and they are working to get set up to restart their
DeMolay Chapter. In addition, Van Wert now has 7 who have been initiated
into Fallen Timbers Chapters and should be well on their way to getting
their Chapter started.
As I write this article, I received
paperwork for new advisors to start their Advisory Council. We also have
serious discussions going on with Delaware and Milan for potential new
Chapters.
I’m also excited to announce that
Portage Chapter in Kent Ohio held a meeting and is working to get their
Chapter rejuvenated. Jacob Wrightsman is going to be working with them to
get a prospect party going and I’m think that they will be looking
for help to put on an initiation within the next few months.
We also had 14 initiated at Medina on
January 3rd and 9 more at Winterfest. Denbrook told me they are working
on 6 new potential members, our State Scribe, Alex D’Ettorre is
working hard at Bowling Green, and Groveport is putting together a plan
to initiate some new members.
Our Mock Trial is progressing along and
I’m looking forward to participating in this NEW activity.
If your Chapter needs help, let me know
and one of the State Officers will be more than happy to assist you.

Last Month's Question: When and where was
Louis G. Lower, the first DeMolay, killed?
Hint: No Hint this time.
Answer: On July 18, 1943, Louis Lower
was murdered outside Union Station in Kansas City, Missouri. He had
stopped to question a drunken security guard who was directing traffic at
a crowded intersection in the city street. When Lower reached out to
inspect the guard's badge, he was deliberately shot in the chest.
Congratulations to our 3 winners!
Daniel Kingsmill, Steven Kingsmill and
Ed Taylor!
Here's your new
question! Who and in what
year was the first person in our country's history to be appointed as
Post Master General?
Hint: He's probably not related to Eddie
Jones.
Good Luck!
