What's the Hook Gonna Be
First and foremost New Membership is important, and
chapter activity are important, but New Member
Orientation is Key. The orientation is key because
if the new guys don't know what they're committing
to
then DeMolay becomes a puzzle, and in the
Information generation puzzles are a waste of time.
Traditionally the New Member Orientation is
a committee headed by the Junior Councilor or a Big
Brother(BB). The purpose
of a New Member orientation is to educate and
involve the new guys. The stages of execution are as
follow.
Before Conferring Degree
1. (1 hour before degree work at temple)
Candidates meet with coaches, BB, and an
advisor
2. BB explains history of order, and chapter
3. BB explains duties of officers, and advisory
committee 4. BB explains conduct, and dress
code at
meetings
5. BB explains what to expect at the Initiatory
Degree
Between Degrees
1. BB explains the Initiatory Degree
2. BB explains DeMolay government at all levels
and chapter customs ( kneeling, raps, etc.)
3. BB explains what to expect in the DeMolay
Degree
After the Degree
1. BB explains the obligation and explains the
purpose and skills developed through ritual work
2. BB explains jurisdictional and district
operations
3. BB explains the need for each of them to find
two new members ( one to replace and one to grow)
The next step is to keep him involved. I am aware
that what I've suggested to you is easier said then
done but bottom line, we need to be flexible enough
to use what has worked in the past with a dash
today's flare. "HOW DO WE ADD TODAY'S FLARE?" I
thought you'd never ask. Well that gentlemen is the
best part about DeMolay; you can do whatever you
want as long as legal parameters are taken into
consideration. All in all a New Member Orientation
could is exactly what you chapter needs to double in
size.

We know how hard it can be to come up with fun
events for your chapter to do but fortunately we
have a few ideas, which we am going to share with
you. Your chapter could do any of the following:
have a bowling party, play flag football, have a
video game tournament, play paintball, or even have
a card tournament. No matter what event you choose
to have, it is very important that the event is
planned as well as can be.
For example, if you were planning a bowling party,
there are many steps you would take before you show
up at the bowling alley.
First, you should always make sure that your chapter
is interested in the event. You can often help the
chapter members become enthused by offering prizes
for the winner of the event. Once your chapter is
interested pick a date that most of your members can
attend, be sure to also make sure that the bowling
alley has lanes available that day. It often helps
to make flyers for the members to take home so that
their parents know what is going on. As the day of
the event approaches, be sure to give reminder phone
calls about a week before the event and then a
follow up phone call two days before the event. Make
sure that everyone has ride and knows what to bring
as far as money or clothes are concerned. Now that
the night of the event is here, because you have
coordinated and planned every aspect of the event to
the best of your ability, you can relax and have a
great time with the rest of your chapter members.

Money Magic
Here's a good idea for those summer days where
the
whether is not so
inviting. Host a Magic: the Gathering, Halo, or other
game
tournament. Game tournaments are easy to organize
and fun to
participate in; Normally costing around $5 and if
cards
are provided cost of cards plus $5 Start by
advertising in the appropriate
place for
your tournament: a card shop for Magic, video game
store for Halo and
so forth. With school starting up this month, this is
a good time to
get back in touch with your friends from school for
some final fun
before summer ends. Advertise for around 2 weeks
then host the
tournament. A good idea for the host location is
your local Masonic
temple. Sell food to your now captive audience and
have fun playing
games and filling your pockets.

From Your Executive Officer:
|
 |
Please take time to read the “News and
Views” link off the web site on a frequent
basis. You'll find out details about many
interesting things happening throughout Ohio. I
want to start out by giving a big THANK YOU to
Brother Eddie Jones who now joins the ranks of PAST
STATE MASTER COUNCILOR. He has traveled many miles
this year helping to promote Ohio DeMolay and given
the rising cost of gas this year; this is very much
appreciated by the members of Ohio DeMolay. I would
like to make a general thank you to all the State
Officers this past year and wish them well in the
future.
We must now turn our attention to membership. Ohio
DeMolay started the calendar year off great but we
have been fading fast the past couple of months. The
Chapters must ensure that the new initiates are
turned into DeMolay International or we receive no
credit for initiating the new members. (I’ve heard
we have several who have been initiated and are not
yet filed with DeMolay International.)
Our new State Master Councilor will be challenging
each DeMolay in Ohio to work to grow our
organization. We need to respond.
Congratulations to the winners of Conclave events
and recipients of the Active and Honorary Legion of
Honor. I would also like to give a special thank you
to Dad Tilden and Dad Woodworth for their extra
effort this year on behalf of Ohio DeMolay and our
Conclave.
Dad Woodworth has stepped down as Governor of the
Second District and it is my privilege to announce
his replacement is, Dad Ed Hampton. Dad Woodworth
has built the strongest District in the State of
Ohio during his tenure as Governor and I am happy to
be able to say he will be continuing with Ohio
DeMolay on the State Level.
Thank you Dad Woodworth for your support of DeMolay
in the Cleveland area.
In DeMolay Service,
Dad Shaw
