Brethren,
Happy New Year! I hope that everyone’s holidays went well and that you
got everything on your wish list. The holiday season truly brings out the
best in people and DeMolay is not an exception. Why just on December 2nd I
had the privilege to attend a concert of the Air Force Band of Flight in
Toledo sponsored by the Masons of the area. It was a great concert and a
great way to inform the people of the community of the great things Masonry
and DeMolay do! The very next weekend was State Ritual Competition and what a
day that was. Everyone competed in a lot of activities and it should be
interesting to see how the Chapter of the Year race is going after all of
those points. The best event I attended all month (besides my sister’s
wedding) was the Christmahanukwanzikah Celebration in Upper Sandusky.
Christmas, Hanukah, and Kwanza were all represented and everyone had a blast.
The best part was the gift exchange with no gift costing more than a dollar. Someone
got a set of hillbilly teeth, someone else a moldy cheeseburger, and someone
even got a half eaten Oatmeal Cream Pie. Overall it was a really fun event! I
hope everyone is ready for Winterfest because I know that I am. Seven
four-story water slides, a 5,000 sq. ft. arcade, and a 1000 gallon bucket can
make anyone giggle with glee. I am guessing that this is going to be a pretty
amazing event and I hope that you are coming. The next month should be a
great way to start off the New Year so go out and talk to your friends about
joining! They can’t say yes unless you ask!
Fraternally,
Bro. Craig A. Loose
State Master Councilor

Of any 100 young men
who join DeMolay, five of those 100 will become Master Councilor of their
DeMolay chapters. And at least one of them will later say that he valued that
experience above his college degree. Eighty or more of the 100 will go on to
complete some form of post-high school education.
Many of the 100 will find their vocation through other DeMolay involvement,
such as Merit Bar work. DeMolay has produced a good number of men, who after
serving as chaplain of their local chapters, went on to become ministers or
pastors. Along those same lines, several of the 100 DeMolays will first be
introduced to some form of organized religion by attending some church or
temple through a chapter function.
Of any 100 young men who become a DeMolay, thirty will drop out in their
first year. Perhaps this may be regarded as a failure. But in later life,
most of these will remember that they have been in DeMolay and speak well of
the program and the lessons it teaches.
Of any 100 DeMolays, only rarely will one ever appear before a juvenile court
judge or be in any trouble with the law. In fact, DeMolay produces a great
many lawyers. And, although the percentages are not known, many of the 100
will join the military. Each of the 100 will learn something from DeMolay and
most all will benefit from their association with the fraternity. Again, the
percentages are not known, but a considerable number of the 100 will also go
into the Masonic Lodge in later life. Of the 100 who join Masonry, many will
serve as a head of one of the Masonic organizations.
A number of the 100 come from single parent families and look to their
advisors (Masons) as positive role models. One out of the 100 will be awarded
the rank and honor of Chevalier, the highest honor granted to an active
DeMolay. Approximately sixteen of the 100 will value their time in DeMolay so
much that they will "give back" to DeMolay by serving as an adult
volunteer in later life.
Although only one out of every 1,000 young men in the United States, age 13
to 21, will join DeMolay, it is interesting to note that many of this
nation's leaders in business, religion, and politics belonged to DeMolay in
their teens. In fact, one out of every twelve State Governors is a Senior
DeMolay and one out of every ten United States Senators is a Senior DeMolay.
One hundred DeMolays ... equals a high number of leaders.

Trash to Treasure!
Think back to the
last overnight, game tournament, installation, or any other large social
gathering your chapter has had recently. There is one key ingredient to all
these events, soft drinks often in aluminum cans. The opportunity for profit
is staring you in the face! Take these aluminum cans, and any other
recyclable materials, to your local recycling center and turn that trash into
treasure. It’ll take a lot of pop cans to make any real money but
consider this: Denbrook Chapter makes over $300 a year just collecting pop
cans and selling them to their local recycling center. Now that won’t
pay for the insurance but it could help some of your chapter members attend
Winterfest for a reduced rate, or maybe pay for some candidates to join your
chapter. All profit aside, recycling is great for the environment and if you
collect enough cans it makes for some great publicity for your chapter. A
write up in the local paper with a picture of your chapter members with garbage
bags full of recyclable instantly makes DeMolay, and your chapter in
particular, look great.

Please take time to read the “News
and Views” link off the web site on a frequent basis. You'll find
out details about many interesting things happening throughout Ohio.
During the past
month, the State Officers have been busy finalizing the plans for Winterfest
and assisting with the Installation of a few DeMolay Chapters. Please make
sure you let the State Scribe (and the Executive Officer) know when you are
planning an Installation. Ohio DeMolay will promote the activity and maybe
you might be able to get a slightly better crowd in attendance.
I also made a trip to Hamilton DeMolay where they were putting together gift
baskets for the windows of a Lodge in the Hamilton Masonic Temple. This is
was a nice touch which I was told was initiated by the DeMolay Chapter.
Last night, December 19th, I was able to attend a very special night for
Masonry in Ohio and for Ohio DeMolay. Our State Master Councilor, Craig Loose,
received his Master Mason Degree. And when asked for remarks (as any good
DeMolay would do), Craig put in a plug for DeMolay.
It was really nice that Craig’s Dad Andy Loose, was also able to
participate especially since he was ready to loose his voice!
Membership needs to be a key part of every Chapters plans for 2007.
In DeMolay Service,
Dad Shaw
